Do you need Car in Sydney Australia?

Sydney Australia is one of the world's modern city. The city still has the old years vibe of having the old buildings and houses all around, I am actually living in an old apartment that looks like those apartments in Singapore and Malaysia.
In your own car, by public transportation or by just walking around the city is cool too, not having heavy traffic that I have experienced in Manila. Sydney is a walkable clean and green city. wide sidewalk with greenery along with it and a park in big vacant spaces. The weather is just amazing. it is hot during summer but there is no strong humidity like those in the middle east and southeast Asia. Winter is cold that is making the people wear their best winter clothes fashionably.

Train, Buses, Ferries are some of the public transportation that is really affordable for both work and leisure travel. They are easily accessible in a convenient bus stop, station, and wharves. During the daytime, these public transport vehicles almost come and leave every 10 minutes without having to queue in line.

Most of the people living in the suburbs and works in the City, do leave their car at the Train Station parking area and then ride the train to get to the city. One of the reasons for that is because of the conveniences of traveling by train. Another reason would be the expensive parking space in the city.

Opal Card is a prepaid card that people in New South Wales are using for their public transportation, there are cards for Adults, Seniors, and Students. For as low as $10 you can buy it from any conveniences store and can be reloaded from the shops, online or by using your mobile app. The fare is affordable for around $2 for a trip.

If you are working and living in the city you actually don't need a car.

Best Place to Stay in Sydney

These are the place to consider if you are looking for a place to stay within the Sydney Central Business District. Ultimo, Chippendale, Surry Hills, Haymarket, Pyrmont, Barangaroo, Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst and maybe Glebe and Potts Point.

George Street in Sydney is considered to be the High Street and the busiest street in Sydney. It is about 3km long starting from "The Rocks" Circular Quey where the popular Opera House and Harbour Bridge is located and end at the Chippendale and Ultimo where the Sydney Central Station, Railway Square, and Central Park Mall is located. Going through the street will connect to Broadway and then Parramatta Road where the University of Sydney is located.

Right Wing of George Street

Chippendale
Chippendale is a small inner Sydney suburb where you will see the Mercure Hotel, UTS (University of Technology Sydney) just when you get out of the Sydney Central Station Grand Concourse. I used to stay in one of the apartment just behind the Mercure Hotel during my first few months in Sydney. KFC, Mc Donald, shops and other fast-food here are open until late.

Surry Hills
Surry Hills is located just on the other side of Sydney Central Station all the way to Oxford Street of Darlinghurst. Most of the houses and establishments here are old looking. I used to stay in one of the apartments here and is good because everything is easily accessible.

Darlinghurst
Darlinghurst is where the Oxford street is located, Oxford street is the home of bars and restaurants mostly related to the LGBT community but is open for everybody. Houses and apartments here are both old and modern. The other side of Darlinghurst is the popular Hyde Park where the Museum Train Station is located.

Woolloomooloo
Woolloomooloo is another inner suburb of Sydney, The first thing you will notice in the location is the Woolloomooloo Bay with high-end restaurants and big parks known as "The Domain" The Domain is walking distance to Sydney Botanical Garden, St Mary's Church, and on the other side is the suburbs of Potts Point.

Potts Point
Potts Point is located next to Woolloomooloo and is around three km from Sydney CBD. The red light district of Sydney is located in the area known as Kings Cross. Kings Cross Station is the nearest Train Station. I used to work in one of the restaurants in Potts Point while living in Surry Hills. Every day I walk around 20 minutes to get to work and 20 minutes coming back home, by bus is just around 10 minutes.

Left-Wing of George Street

Ultimo
Ultimo is the home of the University of  Technology Sydney, TAFE Sydney and is actually walking distance to Haymarket Chinatown Paddy's Market or Market City.

Haymarket
Haymarket is the home of Sydney's Chinatown. Shops and restaurants are all over the place, colleges, and universities are walking distance. Residents mostly live in a highrise apartment. Very Near to Sydney Central Station. The Tram from Sydney Central Station goes through here to Pyrmont.

Pyrmont
Pyrmont is the home of Sydney's Fish Market, The Star Casino, Darling Harbour, and Cockle Bay that is adjacent to Sydney City Centre. Madama Tussaud, Sea Life, Museum and other attractions are also located within the Darling Harbor.

Barangaroo
Walking from the banks of cockle bay you're going to reach the Barangaroo, you will see the modern restaurant in the modern highrise buildings, offices, and commercial buildings. Moving on you will reach the beautiful Barangaroo Reserve/Park and the hill called Millers Point with the view of the big and beautiful Parramatta River/and Harbor Bridge. Walse bay is the next stop where museums and theatres are situated all the way to The Rocks and Circular Quey.

If you Cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge you will reach the Milsons Point, Luna Park, Kirribilli and the rest of North Sydney.

Places like Bondi Beach, Coogee Beach, Watson Bay, Manly, Parramatta,  Chatswood, Cronulla, Blue Mountain, even Newcastle, Wollongong can be reach easily by public transportation such as Trains, Buses, and Ferries.

Cheap Shared Room in Sydney

Sydney is the most crowded city in Australia, So many people from different country are here to study and to work.

gumtree.com.au flatmates.com.au realestate.com.au domain.com.au lhooker.com.au are some of the websites where you can search, checked and book a place for long-term stay.

Coming from Kuala Lumpur, I arrived in Sydney and stay in a backpacker hostel in a room with 5 double decker bed for the first two nights (www.abroadero.trvl.com). With the help of my sponsor, I then moved to an apartment dormitory with 4 beds in the room and 4 beds in the living room.  We are a total of 10 people staying in the apartment.

The apartment is fully furnished and all you need is your food and your personal needs. Internet, electricity, water are included with the rent of $125 every week.

The apartment is obviously crowded and is not properly maintained,  I keep on looking for a new place to stay at gumtree.com.au, flatmates.com.au domain.com.au realestate.com.au and in the local noticeboard and classified ads.

Then I moved to a single room paying A$200 per week with everything included except the food. It was my friend who referred me to this apartment. This is a two-floor apartment with three rooms and one toilet. We are four people including my landlord staying in this apartment.

Arriving Cheap in Sydney International Airport

Before coming to Australia I made a research on how it is to arrive at Sydney International Airport. There I learned that it is better not to bring anything aside from my clothing and my gadget, no food of any kind. One thing for sure, of all the immigration entry procedure in a different airport that I have been trough...they are the most strict.

One of the best things about Sydney International airport is the convenience of going to different places, public transport is just around the corner. Buses, taxi, and train are just there arriving and departing on time. But taking a train from Sydney Airport Station going to your destination is sure more costly than the normal train ride coming from other station. They collect airport access fee of $12.80 for kids and $14.30 for adults plus the normal fare.  If you are coming from Sydney Central Station to Sydney Airport they charge you just the normal fare of just around 2 or 3 dollars, But if you are coming from the airport to your destination expect a deduction of at least 15 dollars from your Opal card. (Opal Card is a prepaid card to pay for the daily public commute with the bus, ferry, and trains).

The best thing is that Sydney is a walkable city and whenever I am arriving at Sydney Airport, I just walk going to the nearest next station and I save at least $14.30. Watch the video on how I do it.

From Dubai to Australia for Work

Travel comes to an end. Welcome to Australia, start a new life here.

I left the Philippines on Feb 2008 to go to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to work as a cook. I left Dubai in October 2015 to travel around Europe and Southeast Asia.  Feb 2016 I arrived in Sydney without enough money to support the new life. But I survived.

Bad Accommodation in Australia

When I arrived in Sydney I first stay in a $25/night backpacker guesthouse with 12 bed in the room.  I stay for 3 nights and then moved to apartment renting a shared room with four people paying $125/week. Note that i borrowed money from a Filipina lady from my sponsoring company.

Ending the Southeast Asian Travel

This is my second time in Kuala Lumpur and lasts before flying to Sydney. During these days I am already on tight budgeting because I am already running out of money. This is already the 5th month of our travel since we left Dubai and travel to Europe and Southeast Asia.

I and my buddy stayed in a not nice hotel in the area of Chinatown,  feeling the dirty floor and walls, a hot room without air-conditioned.

In this period I received my visa approval in Australia. I was very happy because I and my buddy are waiting for this for almost 5 months. I plan my flight to Sydney, bought Air Asia's cheapest ticket and it was good.  My buddy went to Singapore and stayed with his Long Distance Relationship girlfriend while waiting for his Australian Visa. Around 10 days of my stay in Sydney my buddy's visa arrived.

I and my buddy are now both here in Australia and note that his girlfriend followed a year after as a girlfriend de facto visa approved in 2017.

Cheapest Flight Vietnam to Malaysia.

Coming from Vietnam we arrived in Penang Malaysia via the very first commercial flight of Air Asia Ho Chi Minh City To Penang Airport. It is good to know and to experience a fire truck throwing a massive amount of water to the airplane as Firs Flight Welcome procedure. All the passengers of that flight got a welcome gift from the airlines which basically are tourism flyers and little souvenirs. We got this flight as little as 25$ one way per person.

We stayed in Georgetown, Georgetown is a preserved quiet community, walking around you'll notice the houses and apartment are the same pattern as old houses in Singapore, Sydney and I think like other city occupied by the Brtish.

The Murals for me are the most attractive thing to see in Georgetown, every tourist that comes there takes a creative photo of themself with the murals.

The same as other parts of Singapore and Malaysia, Penang is also a very diverse community where locals are Indians, Malays, and Chinese looking people.

Penang Hill is another interesting place to visit in Penang. It is a mountainous park with an exciting train ride showcasing the Penang History and the view of Penang.  Looking at Penang Hill in the picture will make you think it is somewhere in Europe like those trains in Switzerland.

Filipino Travel Vietnam

I and my buddy arrive in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam via bus coming from Cambodia.  Getting into the immigration is easy as the conductor of the Bus collected all the passenger's passport for Vietnam's immigration check-in.

As we get closer to the city the first thing we notice is the volume of scooters/motorcycles on the road, aside from the bus where we are in, there are no other vehicles. If Amsterdam has the most bikes then Vietnam has the most Scooters.
I got a nice first impression of Ho Chi Minh City as it clean with a lot of parks within the city. Noticeably that this city is already like Bangkok with so many white tourists. Expect a lot of travel agency, food shop, bars and nightclub. I didn't notice any striptease show club.

The shopping area of Ho Chi Minh City is maybe smaller than those in the Philippines and Thailand but they also have those signature expensive international brands.

English is not a problem in the commercial/touristy area because most of the people speak English, but getting into the other places is a bit of problem to communicate.

In the parks, you'll notice young people, group of teenagers chatting with foreigners, and then one of my Vietnamese friends mention that that is their way of learning English.

Fast food chain like McDonald, KFC is not big in Vietnam, there are some but not like Philippines where Mac Donalds, KFC, Jollibee are in every corner. Oh! there are Jollibee in Vietnam.

Vietnamese Coffee, Bahn Mi, Pho are some of the original Vietnamese food and drinks that you should try when you visit Vietnam.

As a Filipino, we are allowed to stay in Vietnam for up to 21 days visa free, we consume those days staying in different hotels, the cheapest good hotel room that we can afford. We re using hotels.com to book a hotel because it charges exactly as it is, no need to pay extra when you arrive at the hotel.

Filipino Drama TV program was big in Vietnam at that time. They dubbed the audio to Vietnamese.

My cost of living in Australia

Australia particularly Sydney is one of the most expensive cities to live in, despite Australia is also the country that gives more salary to its employees. If you are coming to Australia on a working visa, it is required by the Australian immigration that your sponsor/company must give you a salary of not less than 53,900 Australian Dollars annually. That is roughly 900 Australian Dollars net every week.

My Cost of living in Sydney
I first came to Australia staying in a backpacker guesthouse paying 25 Australian Dollars each night for three nights. I then found a shared room of 4 people a total of 8 people in one apartment paying 125 Australian Dollars every week including everything except food. The apartment is not comfortable so I moved to a single room paying 200 Australian Dollars every week in a shared apartment with four people. Some of this apartment are usually providing a set of bidding but if they're not, blankets are available at a very cheap price from Kmart, Target, Big W, this three department store are awesome.

Every week I spend more or less 200 Australian Dollars for food because most of the time I am eating outside and sometimes cooking food at home. The average meal in Sydney is ranging from 10 Australian Dollars and up from the food court, fast food chain and regular restaurant. The cheapest meal with rice, meat, and vegetables at a discounted prices of 5 Australian Dollars in the most food court, this is happening at around 3 o'clock in the afternoon to finish the sale of the food.

New South Wales including Sydney are using prepaid Opal Card to pay for every travel by Bus, Ferry and Train. You can purchase Opal card at the most convenience stores with the value of 10 Australian Dollars and up. I rarely used the Opal card because I am just walking to work. The fare is charged with around 3 Dollars depending on the distance, time, day, and usage. 10 Dollars Opal will go a long way.
The same as everywhere the Taxi ride is expensive and Uber is a little bit cheaper.

Basic Personal Hygiene needs like toothpaste, bath soap, shampoo, deodorant, ear cleaner are roughly 3 Australian Dollars except for shampoo, and most of them last for more than a week.

Branded shoes like Nike, Adidas the cheapest are around 120 Australian Dollars, Branded Shirts and Pants are around 50 Australian Dollars. But you can always find a good quality of shoes and clothing at a 75% cheaper price at Kmart, Target and Big W Department Store.

Moved to Regional New South Wales. Australia
I am now living in the regional area of New South Wales, In here you can rent a full house with at least 1 bedroom for just 250 Australian Dollars usually furnished with water and electricity included. The prices of grocery items are the same as those in the city, but I am now able to save a little bit more because there is no so much restaurant here., and Because of that my budget for food is now just around 40 Australian Dollars every week.

Grocery like Coles and Woolworths are everywhere in Australia they usually have a sale, ALDI and IGA are some of the Grocery that sells the cheapest and most affordable ranges of products. There are other independent Grocery and Department Store in every local area of Australia.

Health Insurance is usually paid every month, and my one is 109 Australian Dollars every month,  My prepaid mobile phone before was 40 Australian Dollars for 28 days with 7GB of data, and now I am on a postpaid plan paying 70 Australian Dollar with 120GB of data every month.

Haircut in the city is cheaper from 10 Australian Dollars and it is very rare to see 10 Dollars haircuts in the regional area which mostly is 30 Dollars. I had a Gym membership at fitness first in Sydney and it was 26 dollars every week, I'm sure the other gym is cheaper.

Public transportation is not very convenient in my current location as buses don't come as often like those in Sydney. A car here is a necessity that is why almost everyone owns a car. Because of this, I bought an electric bike that I used for my daily travel to work and recreation. I don't drive mate.

In Australia, People are welcoming and friendly, it is clean and green everywhere, Amazing beaches...Life is Good here actually.

Bus Travel Sydney to Nelson Bay (Port Stephen NSW)

The Port Stephens
I am currently living in Port Stephen's Nelson Bay, still part of New South Wales here in Australia.  Port Stephen is a city in the Hunter region with a lot of bushlands (Tomaree). Parks and Beaches are naturally beautiful.

There are several bays in Port Stephen where you're going to see clean and beautiful residential beaches, they're Anna bay, Fern Bay, Fishermans Bay, Corlette, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Nelson Bay and the Salamander Bay where the only legit shopping mall is located. other parts of Port Stephen are Raymond Terrace, Clarrence Town, etc.

Train Travel
This place can be reached from Sydney by taking the NSW Trains and getting down to Hamilton Train Station and then taking a bus (Port Stephen Coaches) ride going to Fingal Bay. Travelling time is approximately 5 hours including the waiting time. Note that the bus last trip from Hamilton Station to Fingal Bay is at around 7 o'clock in the night, and the last trip from Fingal Bay to Hamilton Station is at around 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Use google map or Port Stephen Coaches website for the timings.

Bus Travel
Port Stephen Coaches are basically the public transport service in the area of Port Stephen. Port Stephen Coaches Sydney Express travel to Sydney from Fingal Bay once a day and travel from Fingal Bay to Sydney once a day.
Depending on your location they are able to pick you up at the proper bus stop. People usually need to make a booking from the Port Stephen Coaches website to secure a sit. You can pay cash on board or by card.

Taxi and Uber from Hamilton Train Station
Hamilton is a suburbs of Newcastle, There are metered taxis within the area of Hamilton that are able to bring you to any part of Port Stephen,
I once arrived at Hamilton Station late, and taxi and Uber are the only options I have to go to Nelson Bay. I asked the taxi driver for the approximation of fare and it so expensive more than a hundred dollar. I decided to check my Uber app and luckily Uber works in Newcastle. I choose Uber and reached my home in Nelson Bay for just $80.  Note that there is no Uber service if you are coming Nelson Bay ,Fingal Bay.

Tourist Life in Cambodia

Compare to other cities in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is just starting to grow, This time it looks just like an ordinary town in the Philippines. They have more parks than high rise buildings. Constructions are ongoing and building a good looking future.

Like Thailand, tuk-tuk, and a motorcycle is the basic means for public transportation in Cambodia, they are negotiable and works as a taxi without Meter. There are other forms of vehicles like improvise bikes with a carriage.

Cambodia uses US Dollar and Cambodian Riel in daily public purchases, expect that when you pay in Dollar they will give you a combination of Riel and Dollar as change.

The restaurants are everywhere in the city, they are in crowded and tourist areas like the riverside and shopping mall. Fried worm, crickets, etc and snails are some of the street food you'll see everywhere in the city.

People are friendly but communicating is a bit of challenge as still most of the Cambodians are not able to speak English.

Streets in Phnom Penh are busy noisy with the sounds of motorcycles, it is coming very traffic in crowded places. Most of the city intersection doesn't have traffic lights and cars just go through by giving way to each other.

In the afternoon parks and public spaces gets a lot of people doing some walking, games, exercise and other outdoor physical fitness activities... it feels and looks really good.

Nightlife, the same as other cities people need to be careful as some people have really bad intentions.

Phnom Penh is a great place to experience, their history will touch your heart especially when you visit the Genocide Museum.

Bangkok Cambodia Avoid Border Scam

Avoid the border scam in the border of Thailand and Cambodia (Aranyaprathet Thailand, Poipet Cambodia)

Booking
We booked the trip to one of the many travel agencies in Khaosan Road, check the prices as they have different prices with the same itinerary.  The vehicle is a van and we leave the places and pick up more booked passengers in several guesthouses along the way.

Van Travel
It was a long travel and we had two stop, one in the gasoline station where the driver asked us to get down and do our thing. The second stop was in the restaurant, a little bit like a small resort.

How the scam works.
We arrived at the Aranyaprathet border of Thailand. When we get down of the Van, there are people guide us to get inside of the building just beside where we get down. They gave us forms that make us think that it is an immigration form. They have these confusing tactics so that we get into them. This scammer asked us money of around 800 Baht for each. They took our passport and asked as to wait for our turn. On our turn, they gave back our passport and asked us to get inside another building and that's when we realized that it is the Thailand Immigration Building. We did the normal immigration check out. Exiting the Thailand Immigration is the Poipet, the border of Cambodia. The guy there is waiting for us and take again our passport and asked us to wait, we wait for maybe an hour and then they gave back our passport already with Cambodia Immigration Checked In Stamp on it. (You'll never know that you are in the Cambodian Immigration as the place is like an open-air waiting area with a lot of people waiting) Then they guide us to the bus waiting area.

How to Avoid the Scam.
Immigration is an easy process, you don't need to spend extra money for the service that is not necessary.  Avoid the scammer by going straight to the Immigration Building, asked the people around where is it, asked at least three people and make sure you are heading to the Immigration. Some countries do not need Visa like ASEAN countries are free to get in without paying any cents.

Bus Travel
Including in the booking fee is the bus trip from Poipet to Phnom Penh. it was a very long trip again. We arrived in Phnom Penh safely.

Use your Google Map it helps.
